Fire breaks out at Alipur car showroom
The incident took place at around 12.30 pm at the basement of Jindal House, known as a landmark residential complex in the neighbourhood.
As many as 15 fire tendered were pressed into the service as thick smoke engulfed the entire locality during peak hours of the day.
Kolkata mayor Sovan Chatterjee visited the fire-ravaged spot. “The situation is under control now. Fire brigade officials and Kolkata Police’s disaster management unit are now trying to douse the fire. There is no need to panic,” Chatterjee said.
Sources said there were at least 20 cars inside the showroom when the fire broke out. “Efforts are now on to bring them out. The reason of the fire is yet to be ascertained. The matter is being investigated,” fire brigade officials said.
West Bengal Urban Development and Municipal Affairs minister Firhad Hakim and Fire Brigade minister Jawed Khan also reached to spot to monitor the situation.
“Necessary action will be taken if we find that proper fire safety measures were not followed at the showroom,” Khan said.
