Five villagers killed in gun firing by Kuki militants in Manipur’s Kangpokpi
Guwahati/IBNS: As many as five people including an eight-year-old child were killed by suspected militants in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district.
The five were killed after the militants opened fire at a crowd.
The incident took place at B Gamnom village in Kangpokpi district on Tuesday evening.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Lunseih Kipgen said that five people were gunned down.
“Three bodies have been recovered so far while two are still missing. Search is going on,” the IGP said.
The top police official further said that suspected militants of Kuki National Liberation Army (KNLA) are behind the attack on the crowd.
According to the reports, suspected militants opened fire at a crowd gathered at the village while they gathered for the cremation of two militants, who were neutralised by security forces on Sunday.
Following the firing incident, the villagers fled from B Gamnom village to the nearest villages located in the valley areas.
Police said that the village chief was also killed in the militants firing.
Meanwhile, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said that his government cannot tolerate such an act of challenging the life of the peace-loving people of the state.
“Violence has no place in democracy. I condemn the excessive action of the terrorist in the strongest terms,” the Manipur CM said and assured that the state government would protect every villager who has fled from there due to the incident.
