Flood alert in Kashmir, but Govt says no panic
Srinagar, June 25 (IBNS) A flood alert has been sounded in Kashmir as the Jhelum crossed the danger-mark and most parts of the valley is being pounded by heavy rains.
However, authorities said on Thursday that the situation is "stable" and "there is no need to panic."
Reports said the Jhelum was flowing above the danger mark in Srinagar, but its water level receded at Sangam in south Kashmir.
The provisional administration in Kashmir has announced flood alert in the valley as the meteorological department has predicted more rains in the region over the next 48 hours.
“The water level at sangam in South Kashmir has stabled at 27 ft while in Srinagar it has crossed 20ft, one ft above the danger level.
The situation is under control and there is no need to panic”, Chief Engineer Flood and Control Division told IBNS.
He, however, said the people residing along the river embankmen and low lying areas of south and central Kashmir have been advised to remain Vigilant.
The Jammu and Kashmir government on Thursday morning said there is no flood threat although the state faces huge inundation problem.
"The weather will start to improve from today evening," an official said.
