Flood-like situation in south Bengal districts, Mamata Banerjee accuses DVC

Kolkata/UNI: With the spectre of flood looming large on six south Bengal districts following heavy torrents, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday accused the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) of discharging water without prior information to the state.

She also came down heavily on Bihar and Jharkhand for this deteriorating condition in the state and described the situation as 'man-made'.

Banerjee said several south Bengal districts have been inundated following sudden discharge of water from the barrage.

She would make an aerial survey of the affected districts on Saturday and ordered some of her Cabinet Ministers to rush there immediately.

State Chief Secretary H K Dwivedi here said rescue and NDRF teams have been deployed in the affected districts to tackle the grave situation and help the marooned people.

The situation at Ghatal is worrisome as a four-year-old boy drowned when the water of Shilabati river broke the dyke and gushed into the village of Govindanagar in the wee hours, while a two-storey building collapsed following sweeping river water.

The river Ajay is flowing above danger level, while Dwarakeshwar river is also in spate resulting in the flooding of vast East Bardhaman areas.

Congress MP Adhir Chowdhury said if the Chief Minister alleged that it was a 'man-made' flood, she should move the Supreme Court.

BJP state president Sukanta Majumder and Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari held the state government responsible for this flood-like situation.

Adhikari also charged the Chief Minister of not ensuring the repair of damaged dams.
