Police on Sunday arrested former CPI(M) MLA Nirapada Sardar, accused of fomenting violence at Sandeshkhali in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.

The CPI(M) leader was taken to the Bansdroni police station in the morning and arrested for alleged instigation of violence at Sandeshkhali after being detained for hours.

After his arrest, the Communist leader was taken to Sandeshkhali. CPI(M) state secretary Md Salim while condemning the arrest announced that they will gherao all police stations in the state on Monday.

The CPI(M) supporters on Sunday staged a protest demonstration against the arrest of their leader.

Sardar was arrested following a complaint lodged by Sandeshkhali TMC leader Shibu Hazra, whose poultry farm and farmhouse were set on fire on Thursday by the villagers.

The villagers complained that Shubu Hazra grabbed the private land of others for his farms CPI (M) leader and Advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya alleged that Sardar's arrest was "unlawful" as Hazra was one of the accused in the violence.

The local administration has clamped prohibitory orders under Section 144 Cr PC since Friday night after sporadic violence erupted as the local people demanded the arrest of the absconding TMC leader Sahjahan Sheikh, official sources said.
