New Delhi, Apr 12 (UNI) Former Union Minister in the UPA regime and Dalit rights activist Krishna Tirath on Friday quit the BJP and rejoined the Congress.

Tirath rejoined the Congress in the presence of AICC general secretary for Delhi P C Chacko and AICC spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi.

Welcoming her back to the Congress party, Mr Chacko said,’’we welcome Ms Tirath back in the Congress. She has been a municipal councilor in Delhi, a three time MLA and two time MP. She has contributed immensely to the Congress party.’’

Sources said that Tirath had met former Delhi Chief Minister and Delhi Congress chief Sheila Dikshit last Saturday and expressed her willingness to rejoin the Congress.

A Minister of state in the Dr Manmohan Singh Government of the Congress at the Centre, Tirath had joined the BJP in 2015.

The BJP had fielded her from the Patel Nagar seat in the 2015 Delhi assembly elections. However, she lost in the election to Hazari Lal Chauhan of the Aam Aadmi Party.
