Former UP CMs can't occupy government bungalows, rules Supreme Court

New Delhi, May 7 (IBNS): The Supreme Court on Saturday ruled that no former Uttar Pradesh Chief Ministers can stay in government bungalows, quashing the law passed by the Samajwadi Party-led state government in 2016, media reports said.

The top court said the former CMs are not entitled to government bungalows.

The Supreme Court has been quoted by Hindustan Times, "Section 4(3) of UP Ministers (salaries, allowances & miscellaneous provisions) Act, 2016 is unconstitutional."

In 2016, the UP government had passed a legislation allowing all former CMs to stay in government bungalows indefinitely.

Former UP CMs Mayawati, Mulayam Singh Yadav, Rajnath Singh will have to vacate their offices after the top court's rule.

The petition against the law was filed by a non-profit organisation.
