Four people manhandled me in Nandigram, my legs are injured: Mamata Banerjee 

The alleged incident occured during her election campaign.

UPDATE AT 10:50 PM: Mamata Banerjee is being taken to Bangur Institute of Neurosciences from SSKM hospital for Advanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).

UPDATE AT 8:45 PM: Mamata Banerjee has been brought to the SSKM hospital in her car from Nandigram creating a green corridor. 

The Bengal Chief Minister claimed that she had sustained multiple injuries in legs, hands and forehead. 

"When I was at a temple in Nandigram, four-five persons intentionally pushed me and manhandled me, it is clearly a conspiracy against me," Mamata Banerjee alleged. 

"When the incident happened, neither the SP nor any local policeman was present there," Banerjee, who gets Z-plus category security by the state, claimed.

Complaining of massive pain in the leg, state's ruling party chief said that she will be returning Kolkata on Wednesday night.

In a statement, the TMC said: "After widespread response from the people of Nandigram Block-1 yesterday, Ms Mamata Banerjee visited several places of Nandigram Block II after filing nomination at Haldia. She offered Puja in one after another temple. There was a massive response from people everywhere."

"At about 6.15 pm, when she was about to leave Birulia Anchal after performing Puja in a temple, a few unknown persons pushed her to the car and forcibly shut down the door, as a result of which she sustained injuries in her left leg and also suffered severe pain in the waist. She, thereafter, left for Kolkata to get proper treatment," it added.

Earlier in the noon, Banerjee, who is contesting from Nandigram seat in the assembly election, filed her nomination at Haldia and visited few temples as a part of her poll-campaign. 

Meanwhile, the Election Commission has sought a detailed report on the alleged attack on Mamata Banerjee as well as the alleged security breach.

A five-doctor medical team has been constituted at SSKM hospital to treat Mamata Banerjee.

TMC MP Nusrat Jahan condemned the incident and tweeted: "Strongly condemn the attack on our beloved Leader@MamataOfficial You may try to harm her, but our Didi shall stand tall always.Pray for her speedy recovery."

The CM's nephew Abhishek Banerjee told mediapersons that his aunt and the MC supremo received grave injury and they are awaiting medical reports.

"She has gone for the MRI. She has received grave injury. We are waiting for medical reports," said Abhishek Banerjee

Senior Congress leader Anand Sharma expressed his concern and said: "Concerned over the physical attack on Mamata Banerjee ji and the injuries she has sustained. Hatred and violence are unacceptable in democracy and must be condemned. Wishing @MamataOfficial a speedy recovery."

Former Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh Yadav also expressed his concern over the incident.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also condemned the attack on Banerjee. He demanded the arrest of those responsible.

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav said: "I unequivocally condemn the cowardly & despicable attack on @MamataOfficialji by goons. PS-WB police is now controlled by EC which is directed by BJP.Nation knows tht ppl who hv no belief in democracy can stoop to any level to vent their frustration of fighting a lost battle."

West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, however, called the incident a "false pretence" on the part of Mamata Banerjee.

BJP REACTIONS:

BJP leader Arjun Singh targeted Mamata Banerjee and told a local media that she is trying to gain 'sympathy' with this episode.

"She is telling a lie. She is trying to gain sympathy now," he told a local media.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya said, "Just heard about Mamataji receiving injuries. I pray for her speedy recovery. In order to avoid any kind of politics over the incident, I would request the Election Commission to conduct inquiry and if anyone is found guilty should be punished."

Reacting to the incident, BJP spokesperson Amit Malviya said this is a reminder to the Cm that she is going to lose the Bengal polls.

 "On the occasion of filing her nomination, for an impending defeat, here is a reminder to Pishi, explaining why she is going to lose…," Malviya tweeted.

BJP's Rajya Sabha MP Swapan Dasgupta said that additional central security will be provided to Banerjee if required.

"We pray for @MamataOfficial speedy recovery from her foot injury. If she requires additional Central security , the Home Ministry will certainly provide it," he posted on Twitter.
