Pune, June 13 (IBNS) Students in India's premier Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) are protesting over the appointment of actor Gajendra Chauhan as the new chairman of the institution.

Students are protesting against the appointment and have boycotted all classes and projects in FTII.

The students of the institute have questioned the process of selecting Chauhan for the post who is also a member of the ruling BJP.

Harishankar Nachimuthu, president of the FTII Students Association of Pune, was quoted as saying by punemirror.in, "Eminent people who have served in the post include Mrinal Sen, Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Shyam Benegal, Girish Karnad, U R Ananthamurthy, Saeed Akthar Mirza and more. All these have either been FTII alumni or have been richly experienced in serious filmmaking or other art forms."

Chauhan has asked students to give him a chance and judge him on the basis of his work.

"I have 35 years of experience. I request students to give me a chance & judge me based on my work," Gajendra Chauhan told Times Now.

He was well known for playing the role of  "Yudhishthira" in the popular Indian TV serial Mahabharat.

The Centre on Tuesday made the announcement of appointing  Chauhan as the new chairman of FTII.

"The Government has reconstituted the Film & Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune Society in pursuance of Rule 3 of the Rules of the Institute for a period of three years. Shri Gajendra Chauhan has been nominated as the President of the FTII Society and Chairman of its Governing Council," read the official statement issued on Tuesday.
