G20 Leaders' Summit gets underway, PM Modi meets Joe Biden

Bali: The annual G20 Leaders' Summit got underway here on Tuesday with participating world leaders set to deliberate extensively upon key issues of global concern including challenges posed by Covid-19 under the Summit theme of 'Recover Together, Recover Stronger'.

The first working session on 'Food and Energy Security' has commenced. Three working sessions are being held as part of the G20 Summit Agenda, the other two being on 'Health' and 'Digital Transformation'.

Modi participated in the session and spoke on India’s efforts to further food security for our citizens.

"At the @g20org Summit this morning, spoke at the session on Food and Energy Security. Highlighted India’s efforts to further food security for our citizens. Also spoke about the need to ensure adequate supply chains as far as food and fertilisers are concerned," he tweeted.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at the Summit venue. He was welcomed by President of Indonesia Joko Widodo.

US President Joe Biden especially came at Modi's place to greet him at the Summit. Both the leaders briefly interacted with each other.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also exchanged pleasantries with French President Emmanuel Macron.

"A brief discussion at the start of G20 Summit with President Emmanuel Macron," said the Prime Minister's Office in a tweet.

"The Summit will witness extensive deliberations on ways to overcome important global challenges. It will also focus on ways to further sustainable development across our planet," the PMO said in another tweet.

On the sidelines of the G20 Summit, the Prime Minister is scheduled to have bilateral meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron, President of Indonesia Joko Widodo, Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sánchez Pérez Castejón and Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Hsien.

The Prime Minister will also address the Indian community in Bali at a Reception on Tuesday.

In a departure statement she's of proceeding for Bali, the Prime Minister called handing over of G20 Presidency to India by President of Indonesia Joko Widodo at the closing ceremony of the Summit- "a significant moment for our country and citizens."

India will officially assume the G20 Presidency from December 1, this year.

"During my interactions at the G20 Summit, I will highlight India’s achievements, and our unwavering commitment to collectively address global challenges," the Prime Minister said.

India’s G20 Presidency will be grounded in the theme 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' or 'One Earth One Family One Future', which underlines the message of equitable growth and shared future for all, the Prime Minister added.
