G7: PM Narendra Modi to meet Donald Trump today, talks on Kashmir likely
Biarritz, Aug 26 (IBNS): Visiting France for the G7 Summit, Narendra Modi is expected to meet US President Donald Trump at the sidelines of the event here on Monday.
Modi arrived in France on Sunday after completing his trip to Bahrain.
Bahrain was a part of his three-nation visit which included the UAE and France as well.
Narendra Modi and Trump are going to meet for the first time since his government made several major announcements regarding Jammu and Kashmir a few weeks back.
The Indian government scrapped the Article 370 which provided special status to Jammu and Kashmir.
The government bifurcated Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories, Jammu and Kashmir with an assembly and Ladakh without an assembly.
Article 35A of the Indian Constitution allowed the Jammu and Kashmir state's legislature to define “permanent residents” of the state and also provided special rights and privileges to those permanent residents.
Article 370 allowed Jammu and Kashmir to have its own constitution, flag and right to handle its own laws except on matters that impact national security.
The decision had further escalated tension between India and Pakistan in recent times.
US President Donald Trump has often offered to work as a mediator between the two nations to solve the Kashmir issue.
Meanwhile, Modi met British PM Borish Johnson at the sidelines of the event.
It was their first meeting since the Boris Johnson became the PM of the country.
