Gadkari defamation: Kejriwal faces 2 yrs in jail
New Delhi, June 6 (IBNS) A Delhi court on Friday framed charges against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal in the Nitin Gadkari defamation case where the former Delhi Chief Minister might face a maximum punishment of two years in jail.
However, the court exempted Kejriwal from personal appearance.
Kejriwal has been charged under sections 499 (defamation) and 500 (whoever defames another shall be punished with simple imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years, or with fine, or with both) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The trial will start from Aug 2.
The maximum punishment under Section 500 is two years simple imprisonment.
Earlier in the day, Kejriwal told the court that he will not withdraw the statement he made against Union minister Nitin Gadkari.
Both Kejriwal and Gadkari appeared in the court on Friday in connection with a defamation case filed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader against the former Delhi Chief Minister.
The court asked both the leaders to bury the hatchet and close the case. But Kejriwal said he won't withdraw his statement.
Gadkari had filed a defamation case before metropolitan magistrate in Delhi in mid-February. He had said that Kejriwal tarnished his image by calling him corrupt.
Gadkari had slapped a legal notice on Kejriwal for including his name in the latter's "India's Most Corrupt Politicians" list.
Kejriwal was remanded to judicial custody in May.
