‘Geography or history’: Indian Army chief issues blunt warning to Pakistan over terror support

General Dwivedi made the remarks during an interactive session titled “Sena Samwad”, organised by Uniform Unveiled at the Manekshaw Centre.

Responding to a question on how the Indian Army would react if circumstances similar to those that led to Operation Sindoor were to arise again, he repeated India’s longstanding position on cross-border terrorism.

“If Pakistan continues to harbour terrorists and operate against India, then they have to decide whether they want to be part of geography or history or not,” he said.

The statement came days after India and its armed forces marked the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor.

The military operation was launched on May 7 last year in response to the Pahalgam terror attack, in which militants targeted civilians in Jammu and Kashmir.

Under Operation Sindoor, Indian forces carried out precision strikes on terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Following the Indian strikes, Pakistan launched retaliatory operations.

India responded with further counter-offensives, also conducted under Operation Sindoor.

The confrontation between the two nuclear-armed neighbours lasted nearly 88 hours before both sides reached an understanding on the evening of May 10, bringing hostilities to a halt.

General Dwivedi’s remarks reinforced India’s position that support for terrorism remains unacceptable and that future provocations could invite a strong response.

His comments also underscored the Indian military’s continued emphasis on deterrence against cross-border threats.
