Goa's popular Curlie's pub sealed days after nightclub fire tragedy

Curlie’s, the popular beachside pub in North Goa, was sealed by the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) authorities on Friday as part of a crackdown on regulatory violations following a recent fire incident at Birch by Romeo Lane, media reports said.

The action comes after the Goa administration ordered a comprehensive inspection of nightlife establishments across the coastal belt to review compliance with licensing, fire safety and environmental norms.

CRZ officials said the inspection drive was aimed at assessing whether beachside pubs and shacks were operating in accordance with regulations mandated under CRZ laws.

During the inspection, authorities detected serious violations at Curlie’s, prompting immediate enforcement action.

Officials said the establishment had continued to flout regulatory norms despite earlier action and repeated warnings.

Curlie’s is among the most well-known nightlife spots in North Goa and is frequented by tourists. A portion of the pub had earlier been demolished in connection with the high-profile death of BJP leader Sonali Phogat in August 2022.

However, officials alleged that violations persisted even after the demolition.

“The establishment failed to comply with CRZ regulations and other statutory requirements despite earlier action.

This left the administration with no option but to seal the premises,” a senior official associated with the inspection told NDTV.

The sealing is part of a broader enforcement drive to curb illegal constructions and unauthorised commercial operations along Goa’s fragile coastline.

The state government has warned that inspections will continue and similar action will be taken against any establishment found violating CRZ, fire safety or licensing norms.
