Gopinath Munde death: Chargesheet against his driver

" A case was registered by CBI case relating to the accidental death of Shri Gopi Nath Munde, the then Union Minister of Rural Development on the directions of Govt. of India. CBI took up the investigation of the case which was earlier registered by Delhi Police vide FIR No.64/2014 dated 3.6.2014 U/s 279/304A of IPC at Police Station Tughlaq Road, New Delhi," read a statement issued by the probe agency.

During the investigation, CBI had taken the assistance of IIT, Delhi to inspect the scene of crime by using the latest special customised state-of-the-art forensic technology and software to ascertain the impact for such a collision of vehicles on the fateful day of June 3, 2014.

"The forensic team from IIT, Delhi opined that accused driver was allegedly driving his car at a speed higher than the prescribed speed limit of about 50 kmph," read the statement.

"It was also disclosed that at the time when the collision took place, the car of victim (Shri Munde) was travelling at a relatively low speed of around 25-30 kmph. This was also corroborated by the findings of the special team of forensic scientists from IIT, Delhi. It was also disclosed that the driver of Shri Munde had also blown the horn whilst he was driving at the crossing, when the fateful collision occurred. Investigation further disclosed that the accident took place due to the rash and negligent driving of accused," it said.

The CBI also investigated other possible lines to ascertain whether such accident could have been motivated by some criminal conspiracy, if any.

"The antecedents of all persons in the personal staff of the victim as well the driver and those associated with him were minutely probed to ascertain whether there could have been any ground for any collusive and planned conduct, but nothing could be found. Similarly, a specially constituted Board of Doctors from AIIMS have concluded that the injuries sustained by the victim during the accident were the ones that caused his death," read the statement.

After thorough investigation, CBI filed a chargesheet.

The CBI had registered a case in connection with his death on June 17.

On June 10, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) recommended a CBI probe into Munde's death.

This came after Union minister Nitin Gadkari and Maharashtra Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Devendra Fadnavis on June 10 met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh here to demand a CBI probe into Munde's death.

Munde, who lost his life on June 3 due to multiple internal injuries after his car was hit by another vehicle in the national capital, wanted to resign from the BJP after facing repeated humiliation, claimed his colleague.

The mishap took place at around 6.30 am when he was on his way to the Indira Gandhi International Airport from where he was scheduled to catch a flight to Mumbai. 

He was rushed to the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) where he was declared dead.
