Govt plans to allow women officers to command army battalions

New Delhi, July 28 (IBNS): Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Jananata Party (BJP) government is mulling to allow women officers in commanding positions in army’s branches like engineers, aviation and signal, media reports said.

The government is planning to file an affidavit in the Apex Court where it will say that women officers joining the force from 2015-16 onwards will be trained to command battalions.

The affidavit would also point out that they would be allowed to compete with their male counterparts to be eligible to head the units, media reports said.

Women officers in the Indian army are allowed only in non-combat arms and are not allowed commanding the battalions.

Women officers were first inducted in the early 1990s and have been now cleared to join the force as permanent commission officers in select branches.

Sources said these women officers would be given some relaxation in terms of physical standards. But they will have to go through the same regimen as male officers.
