Gujarat HC issues notice to EC and Ahmed Patel regarding Rajya Sabha election

Ahmedabad, Aug 21 (IBNS): The Gujarat High Court, on Monday, issued notices to the Election Commission and Congress leader Ahmed Patel regarding the recently held Rajya Sabha election, according to media reports.

Ahmed Patel of the Congress was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat. The Election Commission had invalidated the votes of two rebel Congress MLAs participating in the poll.

The notice was issued based on a plea filed by BJP candidate Balwant Singh Rajput, who challenged the EC's decision to invalidate the votes, media reported.

The EC's decision to invalidate the votes of two rebel Congress MLAs helped Patel secure the minimum 44 votes required for his win. Rajput, who had left the Congress prior to the election and joined BJP secured 38 votes, media reported.

Reply to the notices have to be filed by September 21.
