He should stick to his subject: Meghalaya Guv Tathagata Roy on Amartya Sen's 'Jai Shree Ram' remark

Kolkata, July 8 (IBNS): Reacting to Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen's comment where he said "Jai Shree Ram" slogan is not associated with the Bengali culture, Meghalaya Governor Tathagata Roy said Sen should stick to his own subject, media reports said.

"Are Ramrajatala and Serampore in West Bengal or somewhere else? Don't we say Ram-Ram when we are scared of ghosts? He won a Nobel Prize in economics, he should stick to his subject" Roy- a former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) man- said in Kolkata on Sunday as quoted by NDTV.

Sen also said the culture of Bengal is mostly associated with Ma Durga. "I had never heard of Ram Navami before. I asked my four-year-old grandchild who is your favourite deity? She replied, 'Maa Durga'. The significance of Maa Durga cannot be compared with Ram Navami," he has been further quoted by NDTV.

Expressing his sense of worry for people of particular community feeling scared, Sen said as quoted by the media, "If people of a certain religion are scared to move freely or are fear-bound, it is a serious matter."

Sen made the comment amid some incidents in the state as well as the rest of the country where people were attacked for not chanting "Jai Shree Ram".

Earlier, West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh had also lashed out at Sen for his comment.
