Heavy rains lash Mumbai, 16 dead

Mumbai, July 2 (IBNS): As heavy rains continued to lash Mumbai, 16 death have been reported in rain-related accidents in the city, media reports said.

According to Times Now report,  a wall collapse in Malad East in Mumbai in the early hours of Tuesday morning resulted in the death of 13 people, with more feared to be trapped under the debris. The incident took place at Kurar village, Pimparipada - Malad East and the NDRF teams were deployed for rescue operations.   

A wall collapse incident in Kalyan left three people dead on Tuesday, media reports said.

Amid heavy rains, the Maharashtra government on Tuesday declared a public holiday for schools, colleges and offices in Mumbai city.

State Minister Ashish Shelar tweeted: "#Mumbairains Would like to announce and confirm that tomm 2nd July 2019 has been declared as holiday ,for all schools( public & private ) in Mumbai , Navi Mumbai, Thane , kokan areas ! Stay safe ! @mybmc @Dev_fadnavis @CMOMaharashtra."

Condoling the loss of lives in the wall collapse incidents, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis said: "Pained to know about the loss of lives in Malad Wall Collapse incidence. My thoughts are with families who lost loved ones & prayers for speedy recovery of injured. ₹5 lakh will be given to the kin of deceased."

Train and flight movements in the city have been badly hit due to rains.

According to reports, the main runway in the Mumbai Airport has been closed.

Several flights have been diverted since last night.
