Kolkata, Feb 4 (IBNS): The Congress, Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) and Left Front are observing a day's shutdown in Howrah district of West Bengal on Wednesday (Feb 4) to protest the killing of Arup Bhandari, a youth who was severely assaulted when he resisted sexual harassment of some women.

College student Arup Bhandari, who was beaten up after he protested against harassment of some women on Jan 28,  died at a hospital after 5 days in coma, in Kolkata on Monday.

The police have not arrested anyone so far. Howrah Police Commissionerate's officials said that the five accused persons- Anand Prasad, Raju Tiwari, Sanjib Tiwari, Subham Dube and Barun Sharma- have fled from this state.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) did not support the strike. The state president of WB BJP Rahul Sinha said on Tuesday that they would oppose the strike to keep the city normal. "We will organize a protest march tomorrow in Howrah to demonstrate against this murder and administrative failure," he added.

The WB government has offered a  job for Arup Bhandari's brother. State's minister Arup Roy said that after getting requests from his family they would give a government job to Arup's brother.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called up Arup's family on Tuesday evening and gave them assurance of a proper investigation.
