Kolkata/IBNS: At least 21 people were injured when a fire broke out at a Berger Paints factory in the Shalimar area of Howrah in West Bengal on Wednesday.

The fire started at around 2.15 pm.

"21 of our employees received injuries in the attempt to douse the fire. Most of them are out of danger but a few of them are critical and under close observation," Berger Paints MD and CEO Abhijit Roy said in a statement.

The cause of the fire is being investigated, however, the preliminary investigation points to a short circuit in an AC unit, the company said.

"The incident occurred near the exit gate with the production area remaining completely unaffected," it said.

As many as nine fire engines reached the spot to put out the blaze.

"The fire was initially contained by the efforts of our team and was brought under complete control by the fire brigade. The best possible medical assistance is being provided to the injured employees caused by the unfortunate incident," Roy stated.

Fifteen injured people were rushed to Kolkata's CMRI Hospital for treatment, initial information by hospital authorities said.

"Two of them were referred to SSKM Hospital while the other 13 people are undergoing treatment here," a source in CMRI told IBNS.
