HS Brahma appointed new Chief Election Commissioner
New Delhi, Jan 15 (IBNS): The government on Thursday appointed HS Brahma as the next Chief Election Commissioner in place of VS Sampath.
Brahma will assume charge on Friday as Sampath demits office on Thursday.
"President has appointed Shri Harishankar Bramha, the senior- most Election Commissioner in the Election Commission of India as the new Chief Election Commissioner," a government statement said on Thursday.
"Shri Brahma will assume the charge of the office of Chief Election Commissioner with effect from tomorrow (16th January, 2015 ) consequent upon demitting the Office of the Chief Election Commissioner by Shri V.S. Sampath from today i.e. 15th January, 2015," it added.
A 1975-batch IAS officer of Andhra Pradesh cadre, Brahma, will have a tenure of slightly over three months till April 19 when he turns 65, the upper age limit for the post under the Constitution.
