Ranchi/UNI/IBNS: Senior Congress leader and former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Friday called for a thorough probe into the genuinity of the Hyderabad encounter.

Speaking to the media at the Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Headquarters, he said that he was coming from Delhi to Ranchi and something happened around 0330-0400 hrs.

"I know as much as you know...i am not much aware of the facts but it should be probed thoroughly for its genuinity," he added.

Amid the public outrage over the rape and murder of Hyderabad veterinary doctor Priyanka Reddy, police shot dead all four accused in the case in an encounter at the incident spot at Chatanpally in Shadnagar in the wee hours of Friday.

The encounter took place between 3 am and 6 am in Chatnapally where the body of Priyanka, who was also charred by the accused before murdering, was found.

The sources said the accused hurled stones on police and reportedly snatched the weapons from them and started firing on the them, forcing them to gun them down.

Sources quoted police saying in self-defence, they shot dead all the four accused--Mohammed Areef, Jollu Shiva, Naveen, Chintakunta Chennakeshavulu.

However, an official statement from police is yet to be published.
