‘I am a common man’: Vijay’s first message as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister

TVK chief C. Joseph Vijay struck a personal and assertive tone in his first address after taking oath as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, calling himself a “common man” with no political lineage and promising clean, accountable governance.

Emphasising that there would be “only one power centre” under his leadership, Vijay signalled both independence from alliance pressures and a commitment to deliver “real, secular, social justice” without false promises.

Vijay said he did not come from any royal lineage and suggested that was why the people accepted him.

‘Will not deceive people with false promises’

The actor-turned-politician promised honest governance and said he would work for “an era of real, secular, social justice”.

He also urged the public to give him reasonable time to judge his performance as chief minister.

‘Only one power centre’

“There will be no power centre other than me. I will be the only centre of power,” Vijay said, in remarks seen as a signal that the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam-led government would not be controlled by alliance partners.

The statement is likely aimed at reassuring supporters after TVK formed government with outside backing.

PM Modi congratulates Vijay

Narendra Modi congratulated Vijay and said the Centre would continue working with the Tamil Nadu government to improve people’s lives.

Wealth disclosure and finances

In his election affidavit, Vijay declared a net worth of ₹624 crore, including ₹213 crore in savings accounts and ₹100 crore in fixed deposits across banks.

He also said he would consider releasing a white paper on the state’s finances in the interest of transparency.
