IAF evacuates 546 Indian nationals from quake hit Nepal
New Delhi, Apr 26 (IBNS): The Indian Air Force (IAF) has evacuated a total of 546 Indian nationals so far in the day and night long operations from the earthquake hit Nepal, a statement said on Sunday.
"Immediately within 04 hours of the tremours of the earthquake, one C-130J Hercules, a heavy lift aircraft of Indian Air Force with 39 National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) personnel and 3.5 tones of load was the first aircraft to take off and land in Kathmandu, yesterday, " an IAF statement said on Sunday.
This was followed by two C-17 Globemaster III aircraft, also heavy lift aircraft, one carrying 96 NDRF personnel with 15 tones of load, another C-17 aircraft carrying Rapid Action Medical Team (RAMT) with 24 officers and Paramedics on board.
This was also followed by an IL-76 aircraft from Bathinda having 160 NDRF personnel, 05 sniffer dogs and 28 tones of load.
"Today, 10 fixed wing transport aircraft from the IAF from various parts of India carrying water, Engineering Task Force, Field Hospitals, 8000 thousand blankets, 500 tents, 14 tones of food (noodles), 34 Paramedics, 100 stretches, 1 tone of medicine, 6 tones of prepared food and 3 more field hospitals and NDRF team have been routed. In addition, 6 Medium Lift Helicopters (MLH) are also tasked to carry out casualty evacuation and rescue & relief measures," the IAF statement said.
Meanwhile, fresh earthquake rocked Nepal on Sunday with tremors felt across India a day after a massive quake devastated the Himalayan country and claimed almost 1900 lives besides destroying several buildings, temples and towers.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the aftershocks measured 6.7 in the Richter scale.
The epicenter of Sunday's quake was Kodari, around 80 km east of Kathmandu.
Aftershocks were also felt in UP, Bihar, Punjab, Assam and West Bengal.
Apart from Delhi, tremors were also felt in Lucknow and Kolkata.
In Bihar, the tremors went on for several minutes, reports said.
Metro services were also disrupted in Kolkata and Delhi following the tremors.
Following the fresh quake, the defence ministry, which is helping with the relief and rescue operations in Nepal, suspended vehicular and air traffic there.
"All movement to Kathmandu kept on hold till 4 pm due to fresh tremors in Nepal," tweeted a spokesperson of Defence ministry.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday called a high level meeting to review the situation arising due to the Earthquake.
"The review meeting called by the PM at 3:30pm will be looking at the relief work and other issues arising due to the Earthquake," PMO India tweeted.
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday said he spoke to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar CMs asking them to mobilise a fleet of buses and ambulances to rescue people trapped in Nepal.
