India backs Bangladesh’s call for justice over 1971 atrocities, slams Pakistan’s ‘denial’

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted that Operation Searchlight involved the systematic and targeted killing of millions, along with widespread sexual violence against women.

He also noted that the crackdown triggered a massive humanitarian crisis, forcing millions of people to flee to India as refugees.

“These atrocities shook the conscience of the world. Pakistan, however, remains in denial to this day. We support Bangladesh in its desire for justice,” Jaiswal said.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh leader Tarique Rahman described March 25, 1971, as a “pre-planned massacre” and one of the most brutal days in the country’s history.

The day is observed in Bangladesh as Genocide Day.

He said Pakistani forces indiscriminately opened fire on civilians, including teachers and intellectuals, at locations such as Dhaka University, Pilkhana, and Rajarbagh Police Lines.

Reaffirming bilateral ties, Jaiswal added that India aims to strengthen its multi-dimensional relationship with Bangladesh.

He noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had conveyed India’s vision for future cooperation through Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla during the swearing-in of the new government in Bangladesh.

“Discussions are ongoing on both sides. We want to not only maintain but also expand and deepen our relationship with Bangladesh,” he said.
