India-Bhutan ₹4,033 cr rail project approved: 89 km railway lines to be laid for cross-border connectivity
New Delhi: Cross-border train travel between India and Bhutan is poised to become a reality following official approval of the India-Bhutan rail project, a landmark initiative led by Indian Railways.
The project aims to establish direct train connectivity, strengthening transport links while boosting diplomatic and economic relations between the two nations.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the project, which entails an investment of ₹4,033 crore to construct 89 kilometres of railway lines.
These lines will link Kokrajhar in Assam to Gelephu, and Banarhat in West Bengal to Samtse, both prominent cities in Bhutan.
Gelephu is being developed as a mindfulness city, while Samtse serves as an industrial hub, making the rail links vital for their development.
Vaishnaw highlighted the importance of rail connectivity for Bhutan’s economic progress, noting India is Bhutan’s largest trading partner.
He said, "As most of the EXIM trade of Bhutan is conducted through Indian ports, it is vital to establish robust rail connections to facilitate Bhutan's economic growth and improve access to the global market."
The project marks a historic milestone in India-Bhutan relations, simplifying travel for tourists and creating opportunities for cultural exchange and regional business growth.
The first line, covering 69 kilometres from Kokrajhar to Gelephu, will feature six stations, along with bridges and viaducts.
The second line, stretching 20 kilometres from Banarhat to Samtse, will include essential railway infrastructure.
The initiative is expected to generate substantial economic benefits, including increased tourism, industrial expansion, and smoother movement of goods and people.
Vaishnaw added, "This initiative will provide numerous advantages that railways typically offer, contributing to the prosperity of both nations."
Signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bhutan last year, the agreement reflects the strong ties between India and Bhutan, built on mutual respect and shared interests.
The railway project is set to usher in a new era of connectivity, fostering closer economic and cultural collaboration between the two countries.
