India celebrates Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's 119th Birthday

New Delhi/Kolkata, Jan 23 (IBNS) Amid the much awaited assurance to declassify the files that could provide clues on his mysterious disappearance, India on Saturday is observing the 119th birth anniversary of Subhas Chandra Bose, one of its most prominent freedom struggle heroes who chose a path that was opposite to Mahatma Gandhi's non-violence.

Bose was born in Cuttack, Odisha in 1897.

Hailing from a prominent family, Bose was a bright scholar who joined the Indian National Congress in the 1920's and slowly rose to power.

His rigid stance to rid India of the British governance by armed struggle was criticised by Gandhi and  ultimately led to the formation of his party Forward Bloc.

Though India was freed two years after his 'supposed' death, which continues to remain a mystery even today with many believing it was a hoax by the man himself, Netaji continues to remain a popular hero in India.

On his birthday several lawmakers have posted messages on social platforms, saluting the leader.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "Remembering Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on his birth anniversary. His bravery & patriotism endears him to several Indians across generations."

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said, "Homage to Desh Nayak Netaji Subhas Chndra Bose on his birth anniversary."

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal wrote, "Subhash Chandra Bose - a symbol of rare courage and patriotism. Salute to him."

Congress VP Rahul Gandhi wrote, "A man of extraordinary courage,a patriot &a charismatic leader,Netaji's contribution to India's freedom struggle will continue to inspire us."

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh wrote, "I bow to 'Netaji' Subhash Chandra Bose on his birth anniversary today. He is one of the greatest heroes of India's freedom struggle."

Meanwhile, in a significant move, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to release the digital copies of 100 declassified files pertaining to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose  on Saturday.

Narendra Modi, in his meeting with a delegation of members of Netaji’s family at his residence in New Delhi on  Oct 14, 2015, had announced that the Government of India would declassify the files relating to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and make them accessible to public.

Accordingly, the first lot of 33 files were declassified by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and handed over to the National Archives of India on Dec 4, 2015.
