India-Japan sign landmark civil nuclear deal
"The Agreement for Cooperation in Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy marks a historic step in our engagement to build a clean energy partnership," PM Modi said.
The agreement envisages Japan supplying nuclear reactors, fuel and technology to India.
India is the only country to have struck such a deal with Japan despite not having signed the Non-Proliferation Treaty.
The agreement paves the way for energy-starved India to access sensitive technologies to generate electricity.
“A landmark deal for a cleaner, greener world! PM @narendramodi and PM @AbeShinzo witness exchange of the landmark Civil Nuclear Agreement,” said Indian foreign ministry spokesman Vikas Swarup in a Twitter post.
Modi is in Japan on a three-day visit.
During the last prime ministerial summit in New Delhi in December, India and Japan announced that they had reached a basic agreement on the pact.
