India, Japan sign major military logistics support agreement

New Delhi:  Amid alleged Chinese expansionist policies and tension at the Line of Actual Control, India and Japan on Wednesday signed an agreement which is concerning reciprocal provision of supplies and services between self-defense forces of Japan and the Indian Armed Forces.

The agreement was signed between Japanese ambassador to India Suzuki Satoshi and Dr. Ajay Kumar, Defence Secretary, Ministry of Defence.

"The Agreement establishes a framework such as the settlement procedures for the reciprocal provision of supplies and services between the Self-Defense Forces of Japan and the Indian Armed Forces," read a statement issued by Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"It is expected that the Agreement will facilitate the smooth and prompt provision of supplies and services between the Self-Defense Forces of Japan and the Indian Armed Forces," read the statement.

The Agreement will also promote closer cooperation between the Self-Defense Forces of Japan and the Indian Armed Forces, and enable them to actively contribute to international peace and security.  

Speaking on the agreement signed, Suzuki Satoshi tweeted: " Great pleasure to sign the agreement concerning reciprocal provision of supplies and services between #JSDF and the #IndianArmedForces. Hope the agreement will further promote cooperation between them. JapanIndia."

The agreement was signed at a time when relationship between India and China touched new low amid border standoff.
