India slips 13 places in Global Gender Gap Index
New Delhi, Oct 28 (IBNS): India slid 13 places to 114 in the recently published Gender Equality Global Ranking, media reported.
According to the annual Gender Gap Index released on Tuesday by the Geneva-based World Economic Forum (WEF), India's ranking fell from 101 out of 136 countries surveyed in 2013 to 114 out of 142 countries in 2014.
That puts India far below other nations including China, which is at 87, and Brazil at 71.
In the same index, Nordic nations lead the world again in promoting equality of the sexes, with Iceland, Finland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark placed respectively in the top five spots.
The United States rose three places to rank 20th, while Yemen, Pakistan and Chad remained at the bottom.
"Achieving gender equality is obviously necessary for economic reasons. Only those economies who have full access to all their talent will remain competitive and will prosper," Klaus Schwab, WEF founder and executive chairman, said in a statement.
As far as India’s position is concerned, apart from gender equality, the nation is part of the 20 worst-performing countries on the labour force participation, estimated earned income, literacy rate and sex ratio at birth indicators.
On the criteria of economic participation and opportunity, India was ranked 134.
Its female to male ratio in labour force participation was 0.36.
On educational attainment, India ranked 126 with female to male ratio in literacy rate at 0.68.
India is also the second-lowest performing country on health and survival, ranking 141 just ahead of Armenia.
On the other hand, India is among the top 20 best-performing countries on the political empowerment sub-index, where India ranked an impressive 15 in the female political participation, given a large number of women holding public office.
