New Delhi, Jul 12 (IBNS): Amid tensions in the economic front, trade officials from India and US carried out bilateral trade talks in New Delhi for the first time after the latter withdrew duty-free benefits to Indian exporters.

A delegation led by Assistant United States Trade Representative(AUSTR) Christopher Wilson visited India on 11-12 July to explore the potential for enhanced bilateral trade and economic engagement with India under the new Government.

The delegation held bilateral talks on Friday with the Indian delegation led by Sanjay Chadha, AdditionalSecretary, Department of Commerce, which included senior officials from other Government of India Ministries.

"The meeting was cordial and aimed at providing a new impetus to bilateral trade and commercial ties, in line with the mandate given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the US President Donald Trump during their meeting at Osaka, Japanon 28 June 2019," an official statement claimed.

Both sides discussed the broad contours of bilateral trade and commercial ties and agreed to continue their discussions for achieving mutually beneficial outcomes aimed at further growing the economic relationship and addressing mutual trade concerns.

AUSTR also called on the Commerce Secretary and Commerce & Industry Minister during the visit.

Following the US withdrawal of duty-free benefits to Indian exporters, India also imposed retaliatory tariffs on imports from the country.
