India votes against Russia on Ukraine issue at UN Security Council

New Delhi/IBNS: Breaking away from abstentions on votes related to Ukraine, India has for the first time voted for a procedural matter against Russia at the UN Security Council.

This is for the first time that India has voted against Russia on the issue of Ukraine, after the Russian military operation began in February.

Earlier, India had abstained from voting on a UN General Assembly resolution that strongly disapproved of Russia's "aggression against Ukraine".

On Wednesday, India joined 12 other members of the Council to vote in favour of inviting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to speak via a remote video link.

While China abstained from voting this time, Russia naturally voted against the proposal.

So far, India had not spoken against Russia for its aggression against Ukraine.

New Delhi has repeatedly called upon both sides to resolve the matter through diplomacy and dialogue.
