Indian-American physician Vivek Murthy named as co-chair of Joe Biden's Covid-19 taskforce

Washington/IBNS: US President-elect Joe Biden has picked up Indian-American physician Dr Vivek Murthy as one of the co-chairs of the COVID-19 task-force to handle the pandemic.

Murthy has been named as co-chair alongside the former Food and Drug Administration (FDA) commissioner David Kessler to lead the 12 member task-force, Biden’s deputy campaign manager Kate Bedingfield told NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday.

Murthy was the former vice admiral in the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, who served as the nineteenth Surgeon General of the United States.

The US is currently the world's worst-hit nation from the pandemic with more than 9.3 million total infections and more than 236,000 deaths.

Joe Biden in his first address to the nation as President-elect said that the primary objective for the US leadership now is to stop the spread of Coronavirus and he plans to name a group of experts to help with that task.

"Our work begins with getting Covid under control, until then, we cannot repair the economy, restore our vitality or relish life's most precious moments … all the moments that matter most to us until we get it [the virus] under control," Biden had said.

"On Monday I’ll name a group of leading scientists and experts as transition advisers to help take the Biden-Harris Covid plan and convert it into an action blueprint that will start on January 20, 2021," Biden said in his address to the nation on Saturday (US time).

He had said that he will spare no effort in the "battle of control of the virus."
