Mumbai/IBNS: Embarrassing his ally Congress which is a part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Jitendra Awhad has criticised former Prime Minister late Indira Gandhi accusing her of "strangulating the democracy", media reports said.

"Indira Gandhi had also strangulated democracy...nobody was ready to speak against her. Then, students from Ahmedabad and Patna protested and the JP movement started leading to her defeat. This history will be repeated in Maharashtra and the country," Awhad said, as quoted by Times Now, reminding people of the Emergency rule which was imposed by Congress stalwart Gandhi way back in 1975.

Awhad is a state cabinet minister of the government which is run by unusual coalition partners, Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress.

Warning the minister, Maharashtra minister and Congress leader, Ashok Chavan, said, ".. if anyone disrespects our leaders, a correct answer will be given."

Earlier, Congress' other ally Sena had said Gandhi used to meet don Karim Lala.

Courting a row, Sena MP and spokesperson Sanjay Raut had said, "There was a time when Dawood Ibrahim, Chhota Shakeel, Sharad Shetty used to decide who would be Police Commissioner of Mumbai and who would sit in the 'Mantralaya'. Indira Gandhi used to go and meet Karim Lala. We've seen that underworld, now it's just 'chillar'."

Facing ire from the Congress, Raut had later withdrawn his statement.
