Indo-Bangla Coast guard table top exercise begins
Commander Mohammad Radwan and Lt Commander Fariduzzaman from the Bangladesh Coast Guard are taking part in the exercise aimed at bolstering Indo-Bangla joint search and rescue operations (SAR) in the Bay of Bengal.
The Coast Guard Regional Commander (NE), IG, Kuldip Singh Sheoran said Bay of Bengal is a hotspot of maritime trade and ships of both countries are at risk, hence a strong SAR setup is the need of the hour.
The two-day exercise will take the participants through a dummy Mass Rescue Operation in the bay. SAR at sea is a complex mechanism involving many stake holders and foreign nations. This exercise will give the participants a real feel of the challenges involved.
The Indian Coast Guard and the Bangladesh Coast Guard have signed a MOU in 2015 and established SOP (Standard Operating Procedures) in Apr 2017. Several high level diplomatic visits of DG Indian Coast Guard and Bangladesh Coast Guard have also taken place in last few years.
