New Delhi, May 4 (IBNS) : Indore in Madhya Pradesh has been adjudged the cleanest city in India while Bhopal from the same state comes second in a survey conducted under the Centre's "Swachh Survekshan 2017" programme, Union Minister Venkiah Naidu announced on Thursday.

The third best is the  port city of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, while Surat in Gujarat has come down by one notch to be on the fourth place  and last year’s winner Mysuru in Karnataka has dropped to the fifth spot.

Making the announcements, Naidu said: "Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh are the movers and shakers of the ongoing drive,” observing that there has been “remarkable improvement” in the cities of Gujarat and Chhattisgarh.

The rankings were determined on the basis of citizens' votes.

At least 18 lakh citizens across the cities gave their feedback about the sanitation in their respective cities and towns.

Tiruchirapally in Tamil Nadu gets the sixth rank, followed by New Delhi Municipal Council at number seven, Navi Mumbai at eight, Tirupati of Andhra Pradesh at nine and Vadodara of Gujarat at tenth place.

Naidu  expressed concern that the condition is so bad in Uttar Pradesh, the country’s most populous state.

Gonda in Uttar Pradesh has the dubious distinction of being the dirtiest city followed by Maharashtra's Bhusawal.

Cities in West Bengal have not been ranked as the Mamata Banerjee government did not participate in the Swachh Survekshan.
