New Delhi, June 21 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined millions of people across India on Friday to mark the fifth edition of International Yoga Day.

The Prime Minister led at least 30,000 people in a mass session of exercise and meditation in Ranchi city of Jharkhand as the world observed the fifth edition of the special day which is now marked as a global event since 2015.

Urging people to practice yoga, the PM had himself tweeted several animated videos of various asanas since early June.

"Yoga is ancient and modern," Modi said.

"It is constant and evolving. For centuries, the essence of Yoga has remained the same," he said.

He urged people to make yoga part of their daily routine.

In 2015, when the first International Yoga Day was performed, Modi had led around 30,000 people in practicing yoga asanas at the Rajpath in New Delhi.

Interestingly, the idea of observing a special day dedicated to yoga was pitched by Modi during his his speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Sept 27, 2014.

This was his first Yoda Day celebration since returning to power at the Centre for a second term after winning the Lok Sabha polls this year.
