J Jayalaithaa wins RK Nagar by-poll
She defeated CPI candidate C.Mahendran by a huge margin of 1.51 lakhs votes, reports said.
The election assumed significance as Jayalalithaa eyed a return to the state assembly after overcoming a court conviction in disproportionate assets case.
Jayalalithaa secured 1.6 lakh votes while Mahendran got 9,690 votes.
She had returned to the top post on May 23 after being acquitted in a disproportionate assets case by the Karnataka high court.
She had been convicted in the case in September last by a trial court in Bangalore.
She had to fulfill the constitutional requirement of getting elected as MLA within six months of becoming the chief minister.
