New Delhi, Jul 18 (IBNS): Talking to the Rajya Sabha on the Kashmir issue, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said that the situation in Kashmir is grave and that the fight is between the country and the separatists, according to media reports.

Vice President Hamid Ansari agreed to hold a discussion on the present unrest in Kashmir during the post lunch session of the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad opened the discussion and was followed by Arun Jatiley.

Jammu and Kashmir is now ruled by PDP in alliance with the BJP.

Jaitley opened his speech by saying that people should rise over political differences as the situation is very grave in Kashmir

He also said that the ruling PDP-BJP is not fuelling the unrest. Television debates are also not fanning the violence in Kashmir.

He also pointed out that Pakistan has never reconciled itself to the idea that Jammu and Kashmir is a part of India.

He also urged that a situation has to be created so that the Kashmiri youth do not sympathise with terrorists, the media reported.

Jaitley asked how does one deal with civilians when they turn violent, when people throw stones at the security forces?

He asked the youth in Kashmir to stay from the unrest and not force the security personnel to take action.

Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien said, “The most appropriate expression to use is that the union government has mishandled the situation."

CPI-M leader and party general secretary Sitaram Yechury said that the centre has to make a political effort in Kashmir, How can Kashmiris be won over by bullets, he asked.

Yechury also asked why the government is following a 'blow hot blow cold' policy on Pakistan.

He also insisted that it was necessary to send a message to the people of Kashmir that they are an integral part of India.

Satish Chandra Misra of BSP said during the discussion that  Kashmiris should maintain calm and peace, this will help improve situation in the Valley.
