Srinagar, Jan 18 (IBNS): At least five people died an equal number of persons were trapped under snow after an avalanche hit Ladakh’s Khardung La pass on Friday, reports said.

The Army, local police and State Disaster Response Force are conducting the rescue operation in the area.

According to reports, some vehicles are also trapped under the snow.

“Rescue operation launched after civilians got buried under snow. It is believed that they were digging snow at Khardung La in Leh. Digging triggered a snow slide and civilians got buried. We are fearing that the civilians are trapped,” Deputy Commissioner Leh, Avny Lavasa was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

Jammu and Kashmir has been witnessed heavy snowfall for the past couple of days.
