Jammu and Kashmir: One tourist dies, seven injured in Pahalgam terror attack

| @indiablooms | Apr 22, 2025, at 05:30 pm

At least one tourist died, and seven of them were injured, after terrorists opened fire on them in Jammu and Kashmir's popular destination Baisaran in Pahalgam area on Tuesday.

According to reports, the condition of four tourists is critical.

Some media reports claimed 12 people were injured in the attack.

The terrorists reportedly opened fire on the tourists when they were horse riding in the area.

The attackers reportedly asked about the religious identities of the victims before opening fire on them.

Pahalgam attracts a large number of tourists every year.

The Baisaran area can only be reached on foot or by riding horses.

Security forces and health officials have rushed to the spot after the attack.

The attack took place at a time when Jammu and Kashmir is seeing a spike in tourist footfalls.

The registration for the annual Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage is also ongoing.

The 38-day pilgrimage will begin on July 3.

The attack took place at a time when US Vice President JD Vance is visiting India, and Modi arrived in Saudi Arabia for a two-day visit.

Omar Abdullah Reacts

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah reacted to the attack and said he was left shocked beyond disbelief.

"I’m shocked beyond belief. This attack on our visitors is an abomination. The perpetrators of this attack are animals, inhuman & worthy of contempt. No words of condemnation are enough. I send my sympathies to the families of the deceased. I’ve spoken to my colleague @sakinaitoo & she has moved to the hospital to oversee arrangements for the injured. I’ll be flying back to Srinagar immediately. #Pahalgam," he posted on X.

He further said: "The death toll is still being ascertained so I don’t want to get in to those details. They will be officially conveyed as the situation becomes clearer. Needless to say this attack is much larger than anything we’ve seen directed at civilians in recent years."

Mehbooba Mufti condemns

Former CM Mehbooba Mufti said: "I strongly condemn the cowardly attack on tourists in Pahalgam, which tragically killed five and injured several as being reported for now . Such violence is unacceptable and must be denounced."

"Historically, Kashmir has welcomed tourists warmly, making this rare incident deeply concerning. A thorough investigation is needed to bring the perpetrators to justice and examine potential security lapses. Ensuring visitor safety is paramount, and steps must be taken to prevent future attacks," the People's Democratic Party (PDP) chief said.
