Srinagar, Jan 18 (IBNS): Ten people are feared dead after a avalanche buried two trucks Ladakh's Khardung La region, The Indian Express said this evening.

Five bodies have been found so far and rescue operations are on. The avalanche took place on Friday morning.

Jammu and Kashmir has been experiencing heavy snowfall over the past few days. On Thursday, the Met department had issued an avalanche warning for nine districts — Anantnag, Budgam, Baramulla, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Kargil, Kulgam, Kupwara and Leh.

The Army, local police and State Disaster Response Force are conducting the rescue operation in the area.

“Rescue operation launched after civilians got buried under snow. It is believed that they were digging snow at Khardung La in Leh. Digging triggered a snow slide and civilians got buried. We are fearing that the civilians are trapped,” Deputy Commissioner Leh, Avny Lavasa was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

More snowfall is expected in the region during January 19-23.

The Met department has asked people to plan their travel accordingly, reports said.
