Patna: JD(U) has decided to field veteran party leader Anil Hegde as its candidate for the by-election to a Rajya Sabha (RS) seat from Bihar that fell vacant after the death of sitting member King Mahendra.

Hegde had been a leader of Samata Party, founded by George Fernandez and Nitish Kumar, and became a member of JD(U) when it was formed with the merger of the Sharad Yadav faction of the Janata Dal, the Lok Shakti Party, and the Samata Party on 30 October 2003.

A leader from Karnataka, Hegde is considered to be a close confidant of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and has been looking after organisational work of JD(U) for a long time.

The last date for filing nomination papers for the by-election to the Rajya Sabha seat from Bihar is May 19.

Polling is scheduled to be held on May 30 and the counting of votes would be done on the same day.

The result is expected to be declared after the end of vote counting.

JD(U) leader King Mahendra was elected to Rajya Sabha in 2016 but the seat fell vacant after his death on December 27, last year.
