Jharkhand govt's decision on Sammed Shikharji: Jain community members demonstrate in New Delhi

New Delhi: Several Jain community members demonstrated in New Delhi on Sunday against the Jharkhand government's decision to declare Sammed Shikharji as a tourist spot.

The community members reportedly handed over a letter to the President.

The community had congregated at the Pragati Maidan where it staged a mega protest before marching towards the Presidential palace, reports India Today.

Interestingly, the protest was held on the first day of New Year when a large number of tourists visit India Gate.

The community is protesting the Jharkhand government's move as it believes that the decision would imperil the site.

Sammed Shikharji is a pilgrimage site in Giridih district of Jharkhand.

It is located on Parasnath hill, the highest mountain in the state of Jharkhand.

It is the most important Jain Tirtha (pilgrimage site) by both Digambara and Śvētāmbara, for it is the place where twenty of the twenty-four Jain tirthankaras along with many other monks attained Moksha.
