J&K: 8 killed in road mishap

Jammu, Aug 28 (IBNS): At least eight passengers were killed when a Tata Sumo in which they were travelling skidded off the road and rolled down into a 500 feet deep gorge near Nachlana curve in Banihal town of Ramban district on Thursday.

The Tata Sumo bearing (JK19-1902), which was on its way to sulphur spring in Khadi-Mohi Mangat belt in Ramban district of Jammu province, was carrying 11 passengers including the driver.

Eight of them died on spot while three others sustained injuries.

Soon-after receiving the information about the accident, heavy contingent of police personnel assisted by local population started rescue operation.

Police sources said the rescue team evacuated the bodies of all the 8 people.

A police official said that all bodies of accident victims were shifted to District Hospital Ramban and after completing all legal formalities were handed over to their legal heirs.

Meanwhile,  state Governor N. N. Vohra, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Dr Farooq Abdullah, Opposition Leader and  Peoples Democratic Party Patron  Mufti Muhammad Sayeed, and Mehbooba Mufti, expressed grief over the loss of lives in the road accident and conveyed their sincere sympathies to the bereaved families and prayed for eternal peace to the departed souls of those who lost their lives in this tragic road accident.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah sanctioned Rs. one lakh as relief in favour of deceased and Rs.10000 for injured.
