J&K polls: 71 percent polling in second phase

Srinagar, Dec 2 (IBNS): Braving cold weather and heightened security security arrangements, 71 percent electorate have exercised their franchise in the second phase of polling for the Assembly elections across 18 constituencies of five districts in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday.

While giving details at a press conference, Chief Electoral Officer Umang Narula said that  Karnah reported 75% , Kupwara 62%, Lolab 55% , Handwara 71%, Langate 71%, Udhampur 79.74%, Chenani 75.48%, Ramnagar 75.19%, Surankote 65%, Mendher 72%, Poonch Haveli 73.39%, Noorabad 77.60%, Kulgam 55.44%, Home Shalibugh 36.50%, Devsar 60.03%, Gulabgarh 80.73%, Reasi 80% and Gool Arnas 80.28% votings.

He said the polling percentage may increase after consolidation as details from certain remote areas are yet to be received.

The Chief Electoral Officer said the constituencies that went to polls on Tuesday were spread over five districts for which as many as 2186 polling stations were set up. The stations included 143 critical ones.

Narula added that web casting was done in 178 polling stations and 296 digital and 216 video cameras were deployed.

He said that 199 micro observers and 10296 poll personnel were deployed during the polling.

The CEO said 175 candidates were in the fray for these 18 constituencies which comprised 1542737 numbers of electors, including 818025 male, 724703 female and nine third gender voters.

The first phase of polling that was held on Nov  25 in Jammu Kashmir witnessed over 71 percent voting in 15 seats.
