JP Nadda elected unopposed as BJP president, succeeds Amit Shah

New Delhi/IBNS: Much similar to what was expected, former Union Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Jagat Prakash Nadda was on Monday elected unopposed as the country's ruling party president.

He succeeded his colleague Amit Shah who is considered as the architect of the BJP's electoral successes in last few years.

Nadda, who is a Rajya Sabha MP from Himachal Pradesh, will remain in his office till 2022.

Being born to Narain Lall Nadda and Krishna Nadda, the 60-year old politician had studied in St. Xavier's School, Patna then did his undergraduate course from Patna College and an LL.B from Himachal Pradesh University in Shimla.

His first entry into politics happened way back in 1993 when he was elected to the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly. He was re-elected in 1998.

During his second term as the BJP MLA, Nadda remained the Minister of Health and Family Welfare and Parliamentary Affairs.

A major turning point came in his political career when he was inducted to the Himachal Pradesh cabinet in 2007 by then Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal.

Instead of seeking another term in the Assembly, Nadda entered the Indian Parliament through Rajya Sabha in 2012.

During a cabinet rejig in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the senior politician the Health Minister of the country.

Following the grand success of the BJP in 2019 Lok Sabha elections and then BJP president Shah's assumption of the Union Home Minister's portfolio, Nadda was made the party's working president giving him an opportunity to get accustomed with the outfit's dynamics.

However, Nadda will face serious challenges in about a year as the BJP is desperate to win the assembly elections in Delhi and West Bengal apart from retaining power in Bihar, particularly after getting five states slipping out of its hands in last 13 months.

Though Nadda, who has an impressive oratory skill, is set to steer his party, the Opposition took a dig at the outfit saying the new president would dance to the tunes of Shah- a mighty contemporary politician- reminding the days of Manmohan Singh era.
