Kangana Ranaut's Padma award should be revoked: Cong leader Anand Sharma over actress' independence remark

New Delhi/IBNS: Congress leader Anand Sharma has requested the Rashtrapati Bhavan to withdraw the Padma Shri award given to Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut after the star made a controversial remark on India's independence.

Ranaut, who is known for her controversial comments, has recently said India got its true freedom in 2014 while alms in 1947.

Lashing out at her, Sharma tweeted, "Shocking and outrageous. Ms Kangana Ranaut’s statement heaping insult on the courageous freedom fighters led by Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru and Sardar Patel but also belittling the sacrifices of revolutionaries like Sardar Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekar Azad and several others.

"Hon'ble @rashtrapatibhvn should immediately take back the Padma award given to Ms Ranaut. Psychiatric evaluation should be carried out before giving such awards so that such persons do not dishonour the nation and its heroes."

He added, "Prime Minister should break his silence and tell the nation if he endorses the views of Ms Ranaut. If not, the government should take appropriate legal action against such people."

Speaking at an event of a news channel, Ranaut said, "The British knew blood will flow but it should not be Hindustani blood. They knew it..."

"Of course it was not true independence but alms (in 1947). India got its true independence in 2014," she added.

Ranaut has surely meant India got its true independence in 2014 when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power with its popular leader Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister.

Ranaut, who supports the BJP and Prime Minister Modi, has said Congress was an extension of the British.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national executive chairman, Preethi Menon, has filed a complaint with Mumbai Police seeking a First Information Report (FIR) against Ranaut for allegedly making the seditious comment.
