Karnataka Governor invited Yeddyurappa to 'manufacture majority', says P Chidambaram

Bengaluru, May 16 (IBNS): Former Union Finance Minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Thursday attacked Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala for inviting Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s Chief Ministerial candidate BS Yeddyurappa to take oath on Thursday, despite the saffron outfit falling short of a majority mark.

Hinting at a possible horsetrading by the BJP, Chidambaram tweeted, "Governor invites Mr Yeddyurappa to manufacture a majority in 15 days. Governor gives Mr Yeddyurappa 15 days to convert the number 104 into 111."

The Governor gave BJP a period of 15 days to prove majority, said reports.

The oath taking ceremony will take place at 9 am on Thursday.

The BJP staked its claim despite falling short of a simple majority even as the two rival parties kept pushing for a game changer with a combined strength that well surpasses the magic figure.

With the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announcing that BS Yeddyurappa will take oath as the Chief Minister of Karnataka, the Congress party has now moved the Supreme Court for an urgent hearing.

They have approached Chief Justice of India Dipak Mishra for an urgent hearing on Wednesday night itself.

The Congress has alleged that Karnataka Governor has shamed his office.

In a major political turn, the Karnataka unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday evening announced that its leader BS Yeddyurappa will be taking oath as the chief minister of the south Indian state on Thursday after governor Vajubhai Vala invited the party to form government.

In the Karnataka poll, the BJP emerged as the single largest party with 104 seats but failed to garner seven more seats required for a simple majority.

In a 224-seat Assembly, the Congress, which has 78, has extended its support to Janata Dal (Secular), which bagged 38 seats, to form the government.
